Pirate's Rennie Stennett Goes 7 for 7 in 22-0 Blowout Against Cubs in 1975

48 years ago in Chicago, the Pittsburgh Pirates had an afternoon game against the Chicago Cubs. It was a record setting day in several ways. What stood out about that game was not just the lopsided final score that resulted in a Pittsburgh victory as they scored 22 runs and shut out the Cubs.

Moreso however was the play of Rennie Stennett. On that day, the Pirates second baseman came to the plate that afternoon seven times and with each at-bat he stroked a hit. Seven at-bats and seven hits. He became the only player since 1900 to achieve seven hits in a nine-inning game. One curious fact about the game is that the Cubs sent Rick Reuschel to the mound as a pitcher and later in the game his brother Paul pitched in relief and Stennett had a hit against both.

The final 22-0 score was the largest margin in a shutout in Major League history dating back to 1900. Prior to 1900 the Baltimore Orioles Wilbert Robinson duplicated the feat of seven hits in a single game and while there was one other player with seven hits, Stennett remains the only player to do it in a nine-inning game.

Of Stennett’s seven hits, two were doubles and he added a triple. His batting average after the close of this game was .287. In addition to the seven hits, Stennett has 11 total bases and scored five times as well as knocking in two runs. On the field he added four putouts. But Stennett was not the only Pirate with a big day. Star right fielder Dave Parker had a career day at the plate as well.

“The Cobra” as Parker was known had four at-bats and banged out just two hits, but they resulted in five RBIs, and he scored three times. Parker, like Stennett, also came to the plate seven times, one of which resulted in him being walked. Parker was hit by a pitch on one plate appearance and scoring a sacrifice hit on another. One of Parker’s hits was a home run. Incredibly, there were just two home runs in the game, Parker’s blast and one by Richie Hebner.

Hall of famer Willie Stargell contributed to the massacre with three hits in four at-bats with two runs scored and three RBIs. Aside from Hebner’s home run, he added two more hits and knocked in three runs, also scoring thrice. As a team, the Pirates hit Chicago pitchers around for 24 hits while scoring those 22 runs and their team batting average for the game was an incredible .453. Cubs’ pitchers walked six Pirates batters while striking out only five.

Light hitting shortstop Frank Taveras managed to have three hits in six at-bats all while carrying an average that rose to just .213 following this blowout. Every other starter had at least one hit as Al Oliver and Bob Robertson were the only starters with just one hit not counting starting pitcher John Candelaria. The Pirates in the end left 12 men on base.

For Chicago, their only three hits came off the bats of Jose Cardenal, Andre Thornton, and Dave Rosello. All three hits were singles. As for Cubby pitchers they had a disastrous day. Starter Rick Reuschel who took the loss to drop his season record to 10-16 lasted just 1/3 of an inning in the first as the visiting Buccos scored nine times in the opening frame. Unable to get anyone out, Reuschel surrendered six hits and gave up eight earned runs as well as walking two batters.

Relieving Reuschel was Tom Dettore who lasted 3 2/3 innings but gave up seven hits and another eight runs, seven of them earned. One of the hits he gave up was a round tripper and he walked two. After Dettore came Oscar Zamora, who pitched for just one inning and gave up two more runs. There would be two more Chicago pitchers making an appearance and they were Buddy Schultz as the Pirates hit him hard with six hits and four runs, two of them earned. Finally, there was the starting pitcher’s brother Paul Reuschel who pitched the final two innings and unlike the pitchers before him, did not surrender any runs.

In breaking down the inning-by-inning scoring, Pittsburgh scored nine in the first, two in the third, another in the fourth, six in the fifth, and two in each of the sixth and seventh innings. Perhaps Chicago Cubs fans had a premonition of what was going to take place because there were only 4,932 fans in attendance where for most games the crowds are much bigger.

The game took two hours and 35 minutes to complete and with the victory Pittsburgh improved to a season record of 86-64 and found themselves six games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the National League’s East Division. This was the same division the Cubs were in and Chicago on this day remained in fifth place in the East with a record of 72-80 15 games behind Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh’s 22-0 victory may have been the largest margin of victory in baseball history when it resulted in a shutout, but it pales in comparison to what the Texas Rangers accomplished in 2007 when they defeated the Baltimore Orioles 30-3. That sounds like a football score! Here are some other notable blowouts:

  • June 4, 1911. The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Boston Rustlers 26-3. For Cincinnati they set a record by having all 13 players who stepped to the plate to score at least once. No team has ever accomplished the feat in a single game since.
  • May 24, 1936. New York Yankees 25 Philadelphia A’s 2. I guess you could say Philadelphia scored a safety. That is if this was football. While hall of famers Lou Gehrig, Bill Dickey, and Joe DiMaggio were not the big hitters in this game, it was Tony Lazzeri who smacked four hits in five at-bats that included three home runs and an incredible 11 RBIs.
  • August 12, 1948. Cleveland Indians 26 St. Louis Browns 3. The common theme here continues that the losing team hardly scored while getting their butts whooped.
  • April 23, 1955. Chicago White Sox 29 Kansas City Athletics 6. After just two innings the score here was already 11-3 in favor of Chicago.
  • July 7, 1923. Cleveland Indians 27 Boston Red Sox 3. The second appearance on this list by the Indians and the city of Boston again. With Cleveland ahead 8-0 the Indians brought in Lefty O’Doul as a relief pitcher who proceeded to surrender 16 runs in just three innings.
  • June 8, 1950. Boston Red Sox 29 St. Louis Browns 4. The Red Sox finally made it to the winning side of a blowout and this one preceded the Pirates 22-0 victory over Chicago as the most lopsided score in a Major League Baseball game.
  • June 24, 2023. Los Angeles Angels 25 Colorado Rockies 1. Team records for the Angels were set on this night putting into their record books the most runs scored in a single game as well as most hits ever with 28. They also set the team mark for largest margin of victory and single game record for runs scored and home runs in one game. On the flip side, the 13-run third inning by the Angels was the most runs given up in one inning in history by the Colorado Rockies, a dubious team record.

All other blowouts in professional baseball took place pre-1900 and the results were:

  • 5/13/1876: Hartford Dark Blues 28 New York Mutuals 3
  • 5/27/1876: New York Gothams 24 Buffalo Bisons 0
  • 7/24/1882: Chicago White Stockings 35 Cleveland Blues 4
  • 6/20/1883: Boston Beaneaters 29 Philadelphia Quakers 4
  • 7/3/1883: Chicago White Stockings 31 Buffalo Bisons 7
  • 7/6/1883: Cincinnati Red Stockings 23 Baltimore Orioles 0
  • 8/21/1883: Providence Grays 28 Philadelphia Quakers 0
  • 6/24/1886: Brooklyn Grays 25 Baltimore Orioles 1
  • 6/11/1887: New York Giants 26 Washington Nationals 2
  • 6/15/1887: New York Giants 29 Philadelphia Quakers 1
  • 6/28/1887: Philadelphia Quakers 24 Indianapolis Hoosiers
  • 8/25/1891: Chicago Colts 28 Brooklyn Grooms 5
  • 9/10/1891: Milwaukee Brewers 30 Washington Senators 3
  • 8/1/1893: Pittsburgh Pirates 25 St. Louis Browns 2
  • 8/17/1894: Philadelphia Phillies 29 Louisville Colonels 4
  • 6/29/1897: Chicago Colts 36 Louisville Colonels 7

Follow Us On

In the vast nation of India, naturally, cricket reigns supreme – and has done for decades. Still, with over 1.3 billion people dotted around the Subcontinent, there’s plenty of space for more than one major sport. Since 2014, that major sport has looked to be kabaddi, which has only continued to grow in every regard over the last ten years.

While still leagues behind the IPL’s viewership, funding, and exposure, kabaddi has risen significantly since the launch of the Pro Kabaddi League. Interest in the top-tier competition alone has surged by 33 percent, according to these statistics, while interest as a whole in the sport has grown by 14 percent year-on-year. It’s seen as an innovative and entertaining sport.

Thanks to further investments from broadcasters like Star India, T Sports in Bangladesh, and ESPN+ over in the US, there’s enough money in the league to attract top stars and new talents. Now, the PKL’s reach is seen as far as Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia. In another sign of its popularity, the sport even has a presence in the increasingly popular space of iGaming in India.

Kabaddi Raiders proves an instant hit online

If there’s one place in entertainment you can look to for a demonstration of what’s hot right now, it’s iGaming. Developers can make entertainment products like table and slot games relatively quickly, and as the eye-catching title and theme are so important to getting players, they tend to jump on the top trending themes. This is why, on this website, Kabaddi Raiders is prominently posted as one of the top Indian games.

Sitting alongside Andar Bahar and Teen Patti live games from Ezugi, the Indi slots sensation has players spinning the reels to land kabaddi-themed symbols and search for the sports-like features. While the slot was predominantly made for the developers to appeal to as many Indian slot players as possible, its presence also serves another purpose for the sport.

By being available at a leading Indian online casino, Kabaddi Raiders subtly also promotes the sport itself. It’s clearly visible on the site, among other top slots like Book of Dead, Fa Cai Shen, and Mega Moolah, lending it a great deal of authenticity. This also proves how popular the sport is and that its fans are ready to engage with it even this far beyond the court.

Expanding the KPL under growing demand

The Pro Kabaddi League has been the centerpiece for the growth of the sport, taking it from a much more casual meet-up game to a professional organization. With plenty of money on the line for those who participate, athletes can devote more time to training and even aspire to reach the league from anywhere in the world.

What started as an eight-team league rapidly grew to 12, and while commercial circles and international brand participation are still on the rise, they’re not quite at the level to warrant an expansion to 16 or 20 teams. Still, this route for expansion is very much on KPL’s mind.

This year, the Pro Kabaddi League 2023 Auction showed further signs of growth and progress. As we covered here for the event, teams were able to retain a great mix of up-and-coming talents as well as experienced stars, but the real headline-maker was U Mumba paying a record Rs 68 lakh for Amirmohammad Zafardanesh.

There’s clearly money in the league, and for this tenth edition, the purse was increased from Rs 4.5 crore to Rs 5 crore, hoping that it’ll increase the potential for teams to acquire and keep the best players in the world. Now, while still likely another couple of seasons away, the KPL has announced that a women’s league will be launched.

It’s an exciting time for kabaddi players and, particularly, PKL fans. The sport’s continually on the rise, and it’ll only become more prominent in the years to come.

The GOAT has spoken.

Former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who retired from the NFL in 2022 after 23 seasons, has finally weighed on who he believes should win the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

There are plenty of candidates this season, from quarterbacks like Brock Purdy and Dak Prescott to skill position players like running back Christian McCaffrey and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

But Brady, who’s won three MVP awards himself, said he’d pick McCaffrey to win the award.

“He is definitely, in my mind, the MVP favorite,” Brady said on a recent episode of his “Let’s Go!” podcast, “and according to his quarterback, too, Brock Purdy, who says some amazing things about him.”

The McCaffrey-for-MVP conversation gained a lot of steam after the running back tallied 187 total yards and scored three total touchdowns against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15.

McCaffrey is currently tied with Miami Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert for the most total touchdowns in the NFL with 20 and leads the league in rushing yards and scrimmage yards with 1,292 and 1,801, respectively.

Those stats have to count for something, but a quarterback has won the award every year since 2013.

A running back has won MVP in the past, though: Adrian Peterson took home the award in 2012 when he was on the Minnesota Vikings.

Other recent running back legends like LaDanian Tomlinson, Shaun Alexander, Marshall Faulk, Barry Sanders, and Emmitt Smith have taken home the accolade as well.

Brady can’t vote for MVP, but his endorsement of CMC’s candidacy might count for something among those who do cast MVP ballots.

آس 90 : Richard Riakporhe: ‘If I’d had more experience, I would have knocked Chris Billam-Smith out!’ | Boxing News

CBS vs Richard

Richard Riakporhe and Chris Billam-Smith have a past. They could well figure in each other’s futures.

Riakporhe defeated Billam-Smith on a close split decision in 2019 and remains an unbeaten cruiserweight contender.

Bournemouth’s Billam-Smith went on to become the WBO world champion, a title he will defend against Mateusz Masternak on December 10.

Cruiserweight contender Richard Riakporhe says he welcomes a fight with domestic rival Lawrence Okolie down the line

Riakporhe remains the only professional opponent to have defeated Billam-Smith, although to this day Billam-Smith questions the decision and the knockdown that was given against him.

The Londoner declared: “If there’s debate about it, we can definitely do it again.

“With that fight it was a close decision. I believe I did enough to win the fight. I was confident that I got the W, even before the scorecards were read out,” Riakporhe maintained. “There was one judge that called out the fight in his favour.

“Apart from that, everybody was in favour of me, because I was showing my strength in there, dictating the fight, initiating, throwing cleaner shots, big shots landing.

Speaking on the Toe2Toe podcast, Richard Riakporhe insists that he can go one better and get the knockout in a rematch with current WBO cruiserweight champion Chris Billam-Smith

“If I was more experienced, I would have knocked him out. Definitely knocked him out. I didn’t really know what I was doing, smothered my work. It was my ninth fight.

“I’m way more mature now. If I hurt you, I should be able to take you out straightaway.”

Riakporhe could force that rematch. He is the No 1 contender at cruiserweight for the WBO and expects to be called as the mandatory challenger.

“That’s bound to be ordered very soon. As soon as that’s ordered we’re going to be literally discussing when, where and who. Because it all depends who comes out on top on December 10,” he said.

Riakporhe has also been in the ring with Masternak, when sparring in training.

“I’ve done a few camps with Mateusz Masternak. I understand his style, I know the way he fights. I know what he’s going to bring. He’s definitely a warrior, very tough and I think that fight is going to be a very entertaining fight for the boxing public,” the Londoner said.

“The styles will definitely gel. Masternak’s a warrior. His dream is to become a world champion.

Richard Riakporhe beat Krzysztof Glowacki in impressive fashion and was quick to target world title fights for the near future

“I think CBS should do it, but he can’t take his eye off the ball. He has to be on point every single round, switched on.”

Riakporhe had the option to fight IBF titlist Jai Opetaia earlier this year as well as an agreement to box Arsen Goulamirian, the WBA cruiserweight champion. He accepted the latter only for the deal to fall through.

“We found out that he had some legal issues with his promoters. The rest is history. We had to move on,” the Londoner said. “Energy was high. We thought it was 100 per cent a go. Then we heard he had some issues. It was actually done.

“Once we do get our shot, we’re going to do everything in our power to rip it off whoever’s champion. Literally. They will know. They will know,” he added.

Highlights of Richard Riakporhe’s stunning stoppage of Krzysztof Glowacki in Manchester

“Every single champion, which is why it’s been so complicated getting the shot in the first place. It’s going to be a hard night for every single one of them.

“You will see the displays when that time comes, when I challenge.”

He is now positioned to secure a shot at Billam-Smith, as long as he doesn’t slip up against Dylan Bregeon on Saturday in Wolverhampton, live on Sky Sports.

France’s Bregeon has previously gone the distance with Billam-Smith and Isaac Chamberlain. He is a gritty, durable opponent.

“I put it all at risk,” he said. “That’s what us guys do.

“I’m going to focus on Bregeon first.”

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Richard Riakporhe stopped Fabio Turchi with a vicious body shot in the second round at Wembley Arena

Riakporhe is on the cusp of a big year coming up. As well as meeting Billam-Smith, he has a burgeoning rivalry with Lawrence Okolie, the Hackney cruiserweight, who lost his WBO championship to Billam-Smith.

“I believe it can happen in 2024,” Riakporhe said of Okolie. “The boxing public they hate his style.

“They don’t want to watch this guy no more. I’ll do the fans a favour get rid of him.”

A defeat on Saturday would be disastrous for Riakporhe. He must win, but he also has to hone the tools that would need to conquer his British rivals.

“I wouldn’t mind some rounds [against Bregeon]. We always go for the knockout. So if I smell blood, that’s it, the fight’s going to be over in an instant,” he said.

Live Fight Night

Saturday 18th November 7:00pm

“I always go for the knockout,” Riakporhe continued. “That’s why I stand out from a lot of other fighters.

“It just takes one shot for the fight to finish and that’s what we always want to do and that’s what the fans like to see.

“That’s my gift.”

Charlotte Hornets: Perspective Prior to Upcoming Season

سایت ace90
سایت آس نود
سایت آس90

The Charlotte Hornets are a disaster.

Through four games of the NBA 2k24 Summer League, the Hornets are winless. Their point differential is -9 points, which is the third worst in the NBA.

On July 13, the Hornets announced that second-overall draft pick Brandon Miller has been sidelined for the remainder of the Las Vegas summer exhibitions. Before the 2023 NBA Draft, there was an ongoing debate about whether Charlotte should select Scoot Henderson instead of Miller.

The Hornets submitted their pick to be Miller, although Henderson was seen as the safest pick in the draft.

Following the Hornets’ pick, the Portland Trail Blazers capitalized on Henderson’s availability with the third pick.

The primary issue is beyond Charlotte’s inability to produce wins; it’s Miller. Across five games in both California and Las Vegas, Miller has averaged 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.

In the California Classic, Miller showcased himself strongly by shooting 46.7% from the field and 44% from the three-point arc. However, in Las Vegas, that success did not translate; instead, Miller shot 35.4% from the field and 26.1% from deep in only three games.

In Miller’s last performance against the Blazers, he improved greatly, posting 26 points and six rebounds on 8–15 shooting from the field and hitting three of six shots from deep.

Honestly, that’s a massive sigh of relief for Charlotte.

The solid performance gave the Hornets a chance to pull the plug on Miller and remove him from the spotlight, which unfortunately caused spectators to scrutinize his game.

Now let’s get ahold of ourselves. It’s the Summer League, the same venue that has seen several talented young players cycle in and out that went on to become future busts. That’s part of the draft, and each franchise is gambling their rights to a certain prospect every year.

Unfortunately, the Hornets have missed the mark several times in the last 20 years.

Since 2004, Charlotte has only drafted two prospects that became All-Stars: Kemba Walker and LaMelo Ball, who were drafted in 2011 and 2020, respectively.

The reality is that Charlotte is a small market. Subsequently, the Hornets cannot compete to recruit massive talent via free agency like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York can; that’s implausible.

Charlotte’s biggest free agent splash in recent memory was big man Al Jefferson. In four years with the Hornets, Jefferson claimed a respectable All-NBA Third Team nod in 2014 but was out of the NBA in less than five years.

Year in and year out, Charlotte has consistently missed the mark come draft day.

For example, the Hornets selected Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with the 11th pick in 2018 and immediately traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers for another prospect, Miles Bridges. Gilgeous-Alexander has risen to stardom, notching his first All-Star and All-NBA First Team honors this past season; meanwhile, Bridges spent the entire season serving a suspension for domestic violence charges.

The Hornets’ development department has been puzzling in years past because they have given limited minutes to young players in favor of veterans.

Every team does that to a degree, but for instance, Malik Monk spent his first four seasons in Charlotte and averaged only 18.2 minutes per game. After leaving the Hornets, Monk has seen an increase in minutes, points per game, field goal and three-point percentage, and assists because he’s playing more games.

Knowing Charlotte Miller will likely sit behind Bridges and split time off the bench with either Kelly Oubre Jr. or Gordon Hayward—don’t get me wrong, Oubre is a solid player, but Hayward shouldn’t be playing 31-plus minutes anymore.

Considering this year’s draft, one prospect has some serious upside: Nick Smith Jr. Before injuring his knee in December, the Arkansas guard was projected to be a top-five pick. However, Smith slid to the 27th pick, landing him in Charlotte.

Through six games this summer, Smith has averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, which is solid for a late first-round pick. Moreover, Smith exploded against Portland for 33 points while shooting 60% from the field and 80% from three.

Smith’s early production is a foretelling of his potential; however, Smith may be given the same shy attention Monk experienced with Charlotte.

Another example is guard James Bouknight, who was drafted 11th overall by the Hornets in the 2021 NBA Draft. Despite being a lottery pick, Bouknight has seen the court only 65 times and averaged 12.6 minutes in two seasons.

Unfortunately, one reason for the few minutes could be Bouknight’s subpar shooting. In two seasons, Bouknight has shot 35.3% from the field and 31.6% on the deep ball.

Those struggles have continued for Bouknight this summer, as he shot 38.4% from the field and 23.1% from three.

In retrospect, it seems that Charlotte has inadvertently wasted their pick on Bouknight, as the Hornets have selected a guard in the first round in three of the last four drafts. Especially because Bouknight is simply not getting many minutes outside of garbage time.

The Bouknight and Smith tandem couldn’t win against the New Orleans Pelicans in their last Summer League matchup, as the Hornets started the game by missing their first 14 shots. Subsequently, after starting the game down 18-0 and finishing the first quarter down 25-5.

As you’d imagine, the Hornets lost but not without a fight, falling short 89-83 as Bouknight posted 28 points thanks to going 4-9 from three.

Nevertheless, the Summer League is simply a glimpse, not anything more than a showcase for young talent to grow and show their respective teams what they have to offer.

Even the highly hyped first overall pick, Victor Wembanyama, struggled in his debut against the Hornets, ironically. The San Antonio Spurs only kept Wembanyama around for two games in the Las Vegas showcase.

Nevertheless, the NBA season will be right around the corner, and at least the Hornets can boast their $260 million extension with Ball, keeping him in the Queen City for the next five years.

The Hornets have the opportunity next season to snap their seven-year playoff drought, which is currently the longest in the NBA.

Britain’s Dan Evans was forced to retire against Frances Tiafoe in Vienna after suffering what appeared to be a serious calf injury on Tuesday.

Evans, who was looking comfortable when leading 4-1 in the first set, pulled up after suffering a sharp pain in the back of his leg.

Despite seeking medical attention, the world No 35 was comforted by American Tiafoe as he pulled out of the contest.

It was only the second tour-level retirement of Evans’s career and it means he will be a doubt for Great Britain’s Davis Cup quarter-final against Serbia next month.

Evans had been expected to partner world doubles No 4 Neal Skupski in Malaga, but his injury could now put pay to captain Leon Smith’s first-choice line-up.

Heather Watson fell in the first round of the Abierto Tampico event in Mexico, losing in three sets to Ann Li.

Watson won the first set 6-4, but the American – ranked 50 places below Watson at 156 – raced through the second 6-1 and took the decider 6-3.

Maria Sakkari will replace the injured Karolina Muchova at the WTA Finals in Cancun

In other news, world No 8 Karolina Muchova has withdrawn from the WTA Finals in Cancun due to a right wrist injury and will be replaced by first alternate Maria Sakkari of Greece.

Czech Muchova was the eighth player to qualify for the season-ending tournament after reaching the Cincinnati final and the US Open semi-finals, losing to American Coco Gauff on both occasions.

“Together with the team and doctors we tried everything till the last moment to resolve my wrist injury,” Muchova said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the time needed for the recovery is longer than we would’ve hoped for and therefore I had to make this unpleasant decision.”

As a result, the ninth-ranked Sakkari will feature in her third straight WTA Finals at this year’s event, which starts on Sunday, after reaching the semi-finals a year ago.

In pro football, there are blowouts on the field and there are complete wipeouts. In NFL history there have been three teams who put up 70 points or more on an opponent in one single game. What follows are the five highest-scoring games by one team in NFL history.

Perhaps the worst defeat any team could suffer took place in no less than the NFL championship game. The date was December 8, 1940, and the Washington Redskins with their 9-2 record and winners of the Eastern Conference were playing the 8-3 Chicago Bears for the NFL title. To add insult to injury the Redskins were playing on their home turf. Washington not only lost the game, but they also got their doors blown off losing 73-0. The legendary George Halas was coaching the Bears and Ray Flaherty was the head coach in Washington.

The Bears put up 21 points in the opening quarter and never took their foot off the gas pedal scoring again before the half and adding 26 more points in the third quarter before closing the show with 19 more in the final quarter. 36,034 had to watch the massacre. Red Barber called the game and, in the end, Chicago hit the end zone 11 times. To add to the embarrassment, the game was the first NFL title game to be broadcast from coast to coast.

Some of the big scoring plays in that game included a 68-yard run by Bill Osmanski. A 42-yard run to paydirt by Joe Maniaci, Sid Luckman’s 30-yard pass for a score to Ken Kavanaugh, and a 44-yard run for a score from Harry Clarke. Chicago also scored three times on interceptions to the house by Hamp Pool (15 yards), Geroge McAfee (35 yards), and Bulldog Turner who picked off Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh and returned it 20 yards to the end zone.

The next time an NFL team scored 70 or more points was ironically turned in by the Washington Redskins. 26 years after getting smoked by the Chicago Bears, the ‘Skins turned it on in a game against the New York Giants. This time, however, the losing team was not shut out. In fact, the Giants scored 41 points which in a normal game would most likely result in a victory.

That might be true if the Redskins hadn’t scored 72 points to win 72-41. At halftime of this game, the score was 34-14 so the Giants were in striking distance and kept the score within a 20-point differential after three quarters but in the final stanza, Washington scored 24 points to New York’s 13 making it the 72-41 final.

Heading into the game, New York had won just one game, tied one, and lost nine times. The Redskins left this game with a 6-6 record. In the game, there were eight scoring plays going for 40 yards or more. The longest scoring play was a 74-yard pass and catch from Sonny Jurgensen to Charley Taylor. A.D. Whitfield ran 63 yards for a score for Washington. The game was played at the District of Columbia Stadium with Giants Coach Allie Sherman and for Washington, it was former quarterback great Otto Graham.

The only other time an NFL team scored 70 points was by the Los Angeles Rams on October 22, 1950, as the victims were the Baltimore Colts who lost that game by a score of 70-27. At this point in the 1950 season, Baltimore had yet to win a game, losing their first four while the Rams came into this game sporting a 3-2 record. In the vast confines of the L.A. Coliseum, only 16,025 attended this blowout.

The Rams scored in every quarter putting up 21, 14, 14, and 21 points in the first through fourth quarters respectively. The score after one quarter was just 21-13 Los Angeles but then they put their foot to the gas pedal and never looked back. The Rams had several star players who shined on this day including Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch who scored first for the Rams on a 58-yard pass from Glenn Davis.

Norm Van Brocklin was the Los Angeles quarterback on this day completing 11 of 14 passes and throwing two touchdown passes. On the ground, L.A. finished with 188 yards rushing using nine different players with Glenn Davis having the highest total of 51 yards. Davis was the “Mr. Inside” portion of the famous Army duo paired with “Mr. Outside” Doc Blanchard.

The Rams threw two interceptions, one by Van Brocklin and the other from the arm of Bob Waterfield. Despite only scoring 27 points, Adrian Burk of the Colts threw three touchdown passes but also three touchdown passes but also three picks with Y.A. Tittle adding another.

The fourth highest scoring game in NFL history by one team took place by the Rams again this time making the Detroit Lions red-faced with a 65-20 beat down. This game was also in 1950 and it came on the road for L.A. Following the blowout of Baltimore, the Rams would win five of the final six including the large margin victory over Detroit.

It was a great season in 1950 for the Rams that ended in disappointment when they lost the NFL title game to the Cleveland Browns 20-28. But along the way to get to the championship they were destroying teams scoring the 70 on Baltimore, and 65 against the Lions, but also defeating the Boston Yanks in game two by a score of 45-28, then the 49ers 35-14, Green Bay 45-14, the Yanks again 43-35, and in the final regular season game beating Green Bay 51-14. For the season, the Rams averaged 38.8 points per game to lead the NFL.

Finally, to round out the top five highest scoring games by one team in NFL history was the game played on November 13, 1949, when the then Chicago Cardinals were playing a team out of New York called the “Bulldogs” with the game taking place at the old Polo Grounds. Buddy Park’s Cardinals put up 31 points alone in the second quarter against the Bulldogs coached by Charley Ewart.

The great Charley Trippi scored first for Chicago and teammate Pat Harder added two more touchdowns rushing and a field goal. Bobby Layne, who would become famous at quarterback in Detroit and for the Pittsburgh Steelers was the New York quarterback on this day. Layne would finish the game with 213 yards passing. For Harder, he ran for 117 yards on 13 carries. Being both the running back and kicker, Harder kicked the PAT on his rushing touchdown. He would have a total of eight PATs on the day giving him 23 points scored in the game.

There have been plenty of high-scoring games in the NFL but these five featured the most points scored by one team ever.

Update: upon publishing of this article, all of the above remained true. Immediately after publishing, the Miami Dolphins absolutely ROLLED the Denver Broncos 70-20, putting up the second most points by an NFL team in history. It’s the most points scored by a team since 1966! How’s that for uncanny timing?
