The Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards recently engaged in a high-scoring battle during the 2023-24 NBA season.
Both sides gave it their best on the offensive end of the floor while neglecting defense, as the final score was 131-128 in favor of the Bucks.
For the Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard, and Brook Lopez crossed the 30-point mark, while no other player even reached double digits.
Khris Middleton was one player who couldn’t see the end of this high-intensity game, as he exited the game, presumably due to a serious injury.
However, Bucks head coach Adrian Griffin confirmed that the team only made Middleton exit the game due to precautions, as revealed via Eric Nehm on Twitter.
Bucks coach Adrian Griffin, on Middleton: “I think he had some tightness in his left Achilles and so just took him out for precautionary measures. And then we’ll just evaluate him tomorrow.”
Bucks say Middleton did not need to undergo any imaging on the left Achilles tonight.
Through four games of the NBA 2k24 Summer League, the Hornets are winless. Their point differential is -9 points, which is the third worst in the NBA.
On July 13, the Hornets announced that second-overall draft pick Brandon Miller has been sidelined for the remainder of the Las Vegas summer exhibitions. Before the 2023 NBA Draft, there was an ongoing debate about whether Charlotte should select Scoot Henderson instead of Miller.
The Hornets submitted their pick to be Miller, although Henderson was seen as the safest pick in the draft.
Following the Hornets’ pick, the Portland Trail Blazers capitalized on Henderson’s availability with the third pick.
The primary issue is beyond Charlotte’s inability to produce wins; it’s Miller. Across five games in both California and Las Vegas, Miller has averaged 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.
In the California Classic, Miller showcased himself strongly by shooting 46.7% from the field and 44% from the three-point arc. However, in Las Vegas, that success did not translate; instead, Miller shot 35.4% from the field and 26.1% from deep in only three games.
In Miller’s last performance against the Blazers, he improved greatly, posting 26 points and six rebounds on 8–15 shooting from the field and hitting three of six shots from deep.
Honestly, that’s a massive sigh of relief for Charlotte.
The solid performance gave the Hornets a chance to pull the plug on Miller and remove him from the spotlight, which unfortunately caused spectators to scrutinize his game.
Now let’s get ahold of ourselves. It’s the Summer League, the same venue that has seen several talented young players cycle in and out that went on to become future busts. That’s part of the draft, and each franchise is gambling their rights to a certain prospect every year.
Unfortunately, the Hornets have missed the mark several times in the last 20 years.
Since 2004, Charlotte has only drafted two prospects that became All-Stars: Kemba Walker and LaMelo Ball, who were drafted in 2011 and 2020, respectively.
The reality is that Charlotte is a small market. Subsequently, the Hornets cannot compete to recruit massive talent via free agency like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York can; that’s implausible.
Charlotte’s biggest free agent splash in recent memory was big man Al Jefferson. In four years with the Hornets, Jefferson claimed a respectable All-NBA Third Team nod in 2014 but was out of the NBA in less than five years.
Year in and year out, Charlotte has consistently missed the mark come draft day.
For example, the Hornets selected Shai Gilgeous-Alexander with the 11th pick in 2018 and immediately traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers for another prospect, Miles Bridges. Gilgeous-Alexander has risen to stardom, notching his first All-Star and All-NBA First Team honors this past season; meanwhile, Bridges spent the entire season serving a suspension for domestic violence charges.
The Hornets’ development department has been puzzling in years past because they have given limited minutes to young players in favor of veterans.
Every team does that to a degree, but for instance, Malik Monk spent his first four seasons in Charlotte and averaged only 18.2 minutes per game. After leaving the Hornets, Monk has seen an increase in minutes, points per game, field goal and three-point percentage, and assists because he’s playing more games.
Knowing Charlotte Miller will likely sit behind Bridges and split time off the bench with either Kelly Oubre Jr. or Gordon Hayward—don’t get me wrong, Oubre is a solid player, but Hayward shouldn’t be playing 31-plus minutes anymore.
Considering this year’s draft, one prospect has some serious upside: Nick Smith Jr. Before injuring his knee in December, the Arkansas guard was projected to be a top-five pick. However, Smith slid to the 27th pick, landing him in Charlotte.
Through six games this summer, Smith has averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, which is solid for a late first-round pick. Moreover, Smith exploded against Portland for 33 points while shooting 60% from the field and 80% from three.
Smith’s early production is a foretelling of his potential; however, Smith may be given the same shy attention Monk experienced with Charlotte.
Another example is guard James Bouknight, who was drafted 11th overall by the Hornets in the 2021 NBA Draft. Despite being a lottery pick, Bouknight has seen the court only 65 times and averaged 12.6 minutes in two seasons.
Unfortunately, one reason for the few minutes could be Bouknight’s subpar shooting. In two seasons, Bouknight has shot 35.3% from the field and 31.6% on the deep ball.
Those struggles have continued for Bouknight this summer, as he shot 38.4% from the field and 23.1% from three.
In retrospect, it seems that Charlotte has inadvertently wasted their pick on Bouknight, as the Hornets have selected a guard in the first round in three of the last four drafts. Especially because Bouknight is simply not getting many minutes outside of garbage time.
The Bouknight and Smith tandem couldn’t win against the New Orleans Pelicans in their last Summer League matchup, as the Hornets started the game by missing their first 14 shots. Subsequently, after starting the game down 18-0 and finishing the first quarter down 25-5.
As you’d imagine, the Hornets lost but not without a fight, falling short 89-83 as Bouknight posted 28 points thanks to going 4-9 from three.
Nevertheless, the Summer League is simply a glimpse, not anything more than a showcase for young talent to grow and show their respective teams what they have to offer.
Even the highly hyped first overall pick, Victor Wembanyama, struggled in his debut against the Hornets, ironically. The San Antonio Spurs only kept Wembanyama around for two games in the Las Vegas showcase.
Nevertheless, the NBA season will be right around the corner, and at least the Hornets can boast their $260 million extension with Ball, keeping him in the Queen City for the next five years.
The Hornets have the opportunity next season to snap their seven-year playoff drought, which is currently the longest in the NBA.
In pro football, there are blowouts on the field and there are complete wipeouts. In NFL history there have been three teams who put up 70 points or more on an opponent in one single game. What follows are the five highest-scoring games by one team in NFL history.
Perhaps the worst defeat any team could suffer took place in no less than the NFL championship game. The date was December 8, 1940, and the Washington Redskins with their 9-2 record and winners of the Eastern Conference were playing the 8-3 Chicago Bears for the NFL title. To add insult to injury the Redskins were playing on their home turf. Washington not only lost the game, but they also got their doors blown off losing 73-0. The legendary George Halas was coaching the Bears and Ray Flaherty was the head coach in Washington.
The Bears put up 21 points in the opening quarter and never took their foot off the gas pedal scoring again before the half and adding 26 more points in the third quarter before closing the show with 19 more in the final quarter. 36,034 had to watch the massacre. Red Barber called the game and, in the end, Chicago hit the end zone 11 times. To add to the embarrassment, the game was the first NFL title game to be broadcast from coast to coast.
Some of the big scoring plays in that game included a 68-yard run by Bill Osmanski. A 42-yard run to paydirt by Joe Maniaci, Sid Luckman’s 30-yard pass for a score to Ken Kavanaugh, and a 44-yard run for a score from Harry Clarke. Chicago also scored three times on interceptions to the house by Hamp Pool (15 yards), Geroge McAfee (35 yards), and Bulldog Turner who picked off Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh and returned it 20 yards to the end zone.
The next time an NFL team scored 70 or more points was ironically turned in by the Washington Redskins. 26 years after getting smoked by the Chicago Bears, the ‘Skins turned it on in a game against the New York Giants. This time, however, the losing team was not shut out. In fact, the Giants scored 41 points which in a normal game would most likely result in a victory.
That might be true if the Redskins hadn’t scored 72 points to win 72-41. At halftime of this game, the score was 34-14 so the Giants were in striking distance and kept the score within a 20-point differential after three quarters but in the final stanza, Washington scored 24 points to New York’s 13 making it the 72-41 final.
Heading into the game, New York had won just one game, tied one, and lost nine times. The Redskins left this game with a 6-6 record. In the game, there were eight scoring plays going for 40 yards or more. The longest scoring play was a 74-yard pass and catch from Sonny Jurgensen to Charley Taylor. A.D. Whitfield ran 63 yards for a score for Washington. The game was played at the District of Columbia Stadium with Giants Coach Allie Sherman and for Washington, it was former quarterback great Otto Graham.
The only other time an NFL team scored 70 points was by the Los Angeles Rams on October 22, 1950, as the victims were the Baltimore Colts who lost that game by a score of 70-27. At this point in the 1950 season, Baltimore had yet to win a game, losing their first four while the Rams came into this game sporting a 3-2 record. In the vast confines of the L.A. Coliseum, only 16,025 attended this blowout.
The Rams scored in every quarter putting up 21, 14, 14, and 21 points in the first through fourth quarters respectively. The score after one quarter was just 21-13 Los Angeles but then they put their foot to the gas pedal and never looked back. The Rams had several star players who shined on this day including Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch who scored first for the Rams on a 58-yard pass from Glenn Davis.
Norm Van Brocklin was the Los Angeles quarterback on this day completing 11 of 14 passes and throwing two touchdown passes. On the ground, L.A. finished with 188 yards rushing using nine different players with Glenn Davis having the highest total of 51 yards. Davis was the “Mr. Inside” portion of the famous Army duo paired with “Mr. Outside” Doc Blanchard.
The Rams threw two interceptions, one by Van Brocklin and the other from the arm of Bob Waterfield. Despite only scoring 27 points, Adrian Burk of the Colts threw three touchdown passes but also three touchdown passes but also three picks with Y.A. Tittle adding another.
The fourth highest scoring game in NFL history by one team took place by the Rams again this time making the Detroit Lions red-faced with a 65-20 beat down. This game was also in 1950 and it came on the road for L.A. Following the blowout of Baltimore, the Rams would win five of the final six including the large margin victory over Detroit.
It was a great season in 1950 for the Rams that ended in disappointment when they lost the NFL title game to the Cleveland Browns 20-28. But along the way to get to the championship they were destroying teams scoring the 70 on Baltimore, and 65 against the Lions, but also defeating the Boston Yanks in game two by a score of 45-28, then the 49ers 35-14, Green Bay 45-14, the Yanks again 43-35, and in the final regular season game beating Green Bay 51-14. For the season, the Rams averaged 38.8 points per game to lead the NFL.
Finally, to round out the top five highest scoring games by one team in NFL history was the game played on November 13, 1949, when the then Chicago Cardinals were playing a team out of New York called the “Bulldogs” with the game taking place at the old Polo Grounds. Buddy Park’s Cardinals put up 31 points alone in the second quarter against the Bulldogs coached by Charley Ewart.
The great Charley Trippi scored first for Chicago and teammate Pat Harder added two more touchdowns rushing and a field goal. Bobby Layne, who would become famous at quarterback in Detroit and for the Pittsburgh Steelers was the New York quarterback on this day. Layne would finish the game with 213 yards passing. For Harder, he ran for 117 yards on 13 carries. Being both the running back and kicker, Harder kicked the PAT on his rushing touchdown. He would have a total of eight PATs on the day giving him 23 points scored in the game.
There have been plenty of high-scoring games in the NFL but these five featured the most points scored by one team ever.
Update: upon publishing of this article, all of the above remained true. Immediately after publishing, the Miami Dolphins absolutely ROLLED the Denver Broncos 70-20, putting up the second most points by an NFL team in history. It’s the most points scored by a team since 1966! How’s that for uncanny timing?

When the Toronto Blue Jays acquired Paul DeJong at the trade deadline, the hope was that he could raise the team’s floor at the shortstop position until Bo Bichette’s return from a knee injury.
Unfortunately for the Blue Jays, DeJong has produced the worst offensive stretch of his seven-year MLB career since joining the team.
Instead of closing the gap between the team’s existing backup shortstop options and Bichette — albeit by a fairly modest degree — DeJong has created a massive gulf between what the Blue Jays could’ve reasonably expected from their star shortstop and what they’ve gotten from the position lately.
Since Bichette’s last game on July 31, the Blue Jays have gotten a .115/.115/.135 line from their shortstops, good for a -43 wRC+. Unsurprisingly, that’s the worst number in the majors over that span with the 29th-ranked team — the Miami Marlins — producing a 9 wRC+.
In terms of raw production, Toronto has gotten six hits (five singles and a double), two runs, and three RBI from the position in more than half of a month. Those measures don’t perfectly capture offensive contributions, but here’s a comparison between them and what Bichette — who plays essentially every day when healthy — has averaged over the same number of games (15) in 2023.

At the very least the Blue Jays have probably missed out on a couple of runs via the long ball, and considering where Bichette hits in the lineup it seems fair to assume 14 more hits would’ve translated to a few more runs here and there.
If we want to get a bit more specific on that, there are two other ways to approach it. One would be via WAR. The differences between Bichette and DeJong vary depending on which WAR formula you use, and Santiago Espinal’s limited time at short in recent weeks is too small a sample to spit out a WAR total.
That means we’re estimating a bit here, but it still gives us a sense of what Toronto has lost.

Whichever way you slice it you’re looking at 1.4 wins or approximately 14 runs. You can probably shave 0.1 or so off of that for Espinal, but we’re still looking at more than one win in the standings by overall production.
Another way to tackle this comparison would be to look at win probability added. That statistic doesn’t always paint an accurate picture of a player’s true talent, but it captures contribution to winning and that’s what we’re looking at here.
Since joining Toronto, DeJong’s WPA sits at -0.84. Meanwhile Bichette has generated approximately +0.19 per 15 games this season. That’s a difference of 1.04 wins, but Espinal’s contributions are easier to gauge here and his two strong games at short between Aug. 10 and Aug. 12 resulted in +0.30 WPA, putting the difference down to 0.74, or about three quarters of a win.
There is no perfect way to capture the difference between a star shortstop and a struggling fill-in over such a small period of time — especially without considering defence, which is borderline unquantifiable in such a small sample.

Even so, it seems fair to assume that Bichette’s absence has cost Toronto approximately one game in August. Considering the Blue Jays have taken three one-run losses in his absence, the right distribution of his hits might’ve made an even more pronounced difference.
We don’t know exactly what he would’ve done when, but we do know with almost ironclad certainty that he would’ve given Toronto more than it’s gotten since the beginning of August.
Just one victory is a massive difference considering a player who generates a win above replacement every 15 games is almost certain to win MVP. The bar was lower than replacement level for Bichette, but the fact it’s reasonable to ascribe that big an impact to his absence shows how good he’s been this season.
With the Blue Jays sitting just one game ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the battle for the last spot in the American League wild-card race, it’s clear the team needs Bichette back. The Blue Jays’ postseason fate could easily come down to a game or two, and their star shortstop’s absence has already taken a tangible toll.

[in Switzerland and Turkey] و دیدن بیشتر راگبی.
