The Toronto Blue Jays will look for their fourth series win in a row when they wrap up a nine-game homestand with a Canada Day weekend set against the slumping Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre.

Boston may be last in the powerful American League East, but the Red Sox have scored the second-most runs in the division.

Hours after word emerged that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is returning to the Home Run Derby, the Blue Jays’ star first baseman broke a 0-0 tie with a two-run homer in the sixth.

Divisional Woes

The Blue Jays return to AL East play, where they have a bad record of 7-17.

Toronto lost all four games in a series at Fenway Park against the Red Sox to open what was a rough May.

Boston scored 32 runs against the Blue Jays that series. Berrios and Kikuchi had no-decisions as the Red Sox capitalized late in those games against the Toronto bullpen, while Gausman had one of his worst starts of the season (eight runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings) in the series finale.

O Canada

Canada Day always is one of the most anticipated games of the year in Toronto.

Kikuchi actually started against the Blue Jays two Canada Days ago when he was a member of the Seattle Mariners. But the game — a 7-2 Mariners win — was in Buffalo, N.Y. with the Blue Jays still not cleared to play at home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Blue Jays crushed the Rays 9-2 last year in their first Canada Day game in Toronto since 2019.

Paxton, a native of Ladner, B.C., finally made his debut with the Red Sox in May after missing all of 2022 while recovering from Tommy John surgery and starting this season on the injured list with a hamstring injury.

Paxton left his last start on Saturday with knee soreness after just four innings, but remains set to go Friday.

The 34-year-old threw a no-hitter against the Blue Jays as a Mariner at Rogers Centre in May 2018.
